The Lobster Trap
Once upon a time, while vacationing on Nantucket during the 1980s, my family decided to dine at the casual restaurant known as The Lobster Trap. The décor of the place involved a lot of shellacked pine and the kind of heavy, wooden bar stools that might make you think of Captain & Tenille. It was retro-New England-seaside without the slightest wink of irony. From what I can remember, the place was packed and boisterous and my parents were probably drinking some kind of house-made rum concoction. I’m also quite sure my sister and I were having a series of Shirley Temples. We...

Stop & Shop is the great melting pot of Nantucket. Whether you’ve flown in on a private jet and own a deluxe waterfront home staffed my a gourmet chef and several house maids, or you’re an illegal immigrant washing dishes in the kitchen at The Faregrounds, at some point, you will both probably end up standing side-by side at the deli counter at Stop & Shop. Old and young, beautiful and weathered, well-to-do or struggling to survive, the Stop & Shop is an unlikely social experiment that brings everyone together. Of course, maybe the guy with the staff can send some kind...

Here’s the recipe for the fabulous pina coladas we drank this summer on Nantucket. I created this recipe based on a version I found on a web site called www.pinacoladarecipe.org. The “.org” somehow makes it seem as though this is a government run site, which I find hilarious. Let’s hope our taxpaying dollars aren’t going towards perfecting the ideal pina colada! 1 Pina Colada 2 oz Myer’s dark rum 2 oz pineapple juice 1-2 oz Coco Lopez Crème De Coconut 1 cup of ice Pour all ingredients into your blender and blend until smooth. If you’re going to go through the...

In 2010, after nearly 25 years as the residents of 20 Lily St., my parents decided to rent their house on Nantucket. It seemed like a perfect way to launch a new business. So far, this plan has gone over like gangbusters, and I’m sure it’s partly due to the fact that my family, and in particular my mother, has been operating as an amateur chef, concierge, and all-around entertainer for years. My parents were professional vacation planners without even knowing it. Our house has been the backdrop behind a countless number of festive and memorable candle-lit dinner parties—even my...

Nothing says summer vacation like an over-the-top, gluttony-inspired visit to a candy store. Stuffing a basket with so-called “penny candy” harkens back to a time when life was simpler. When I was a kid, the classic penny candies might have been designed to attract people my parent’s age to the store, but today, even people in my own generation are familiar with classics like: Dubble Bubble, Mary Janes, Necco Wafers, Junior Mints, and Bonomo Turkish Taffy. Even better were the novelty items like candy necklaces, candy lipstick, and the ultimate bad boy selection—candy cigarettes. ...
